The beginning of Luke's story originates from the Law of Moses. The Law provided the people of God forgiveness. Forgiveness from the debt, slavery, and restoration of property to original owners. This period of Jubilee was a time of restoration and renewal for the Kingdom of God. Jesus was the son of a laborer and a social outcast. He was a Galilean and far from prominence. Yet Jesus brought something more important than civil authority and prestige. He taught something more alluring than ethnic elitism. Jesus declared jubilee! This jubilee releases captives and raises the spiritually dead. This jubilee forgives the debt of sin and urges the church to share in one another’s needs. And, just like the Law of Moses, this jubilee restore property lines. Jesus declaring jubilee, once and for all, placed the boundary lines of the Kingdom of God back where they were always supposed to be. Luke tells a story. It is a story of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is a story of the people of God doing the work of the Lord. Luke’s story is about perpetual spiritual jubilee and about God expanding the Kingdom!
