As God’s chosen people, Israel was set apart to worship with all holiness & sincerity. They kept the sacrifices, the offerings, and the festivals God declared. But, they continued their worship practices, while stomping on the weak and impoverished. They socially cast out and marginalized classes of people, missing God’s call entirely.
So Amos was sent, an Old Testament Prophet declaring judgement & discipline to Israel. No longer would God tolerate the marring of His Image in humanity.
Amos is a message for today. True and genuine worship of our God is not about looking righteous or acting righteous. It is about being righteous. Attending Church every Sunday and never missing a tithe are not enough on their own. Jesus cared about people above ceremony. And we too, are called, as the people of God, to be holy to be righteous. We are called to truly be like Jesus.
